My Primer Collection

Hey Lovelies,
Today's post is going up be on my primer collection. Earlier in the year I decided that using primer wasn't essential but more of a luxury and started skipping that step in my make up routine, but it wasn't long before I realised what a big mistake I was making. My foundation wasn't staying on as long as I need it to, my make up was sitting in my pores and I was getting a lot of shine in my t-zone. Needless to say I went back to using foundation primers, and here are my thoughts on all the ones which I currently have in my collection.
Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer, 30ml, RRP £25.00 (link)
I work next to a Smashbox counter and am constantly eyeing up their amazing products. Primers is perhaps the product they are most famous for, and I can easily see why. Smashbox have a primer for pretty much every skin type and skincare concern, from oil free to hydrating to blemish control and more! The one I own is their regular Photo Finish Foundation Primer. This primer is clear and contains Vitamins A and E, grape seed extract and green tea. When I  apply it to my skin, it leaves it feeling smooth and creates a prefect base for my foundation. My make up lasts longer when I have this on, and my T-zone is less shiny.
Benefit Porefessional, 22ml, RRP £24.50 (link)
I can't believe it took me so long to try out Benefit's Porefessional primer, especially considering it's the number one selling primer in the UK. I think what was putting my off was the packaging. I don't really like the lady pictured on the tube haha. However, now that I have tried Porefessional, I am well and truly converted and can finally understand what all the hype is about.  This is by far the best foundation primer I have ever come across. It's oil free and contains silica which absorbs excess oils. If that isn't enough, Porefessional also contains the antioxidant Vitamin E to help protect your skin against environmental damage. I apply about a pea sized amount of it on my face after my moisturiser but before my foundation. My make up goes on a lot smoother when I use Porefessional, the size of my pores is visibly reduced. It also helps to prevent my T-zone from getting shiny. This primer is amazing and I can't recommend it enough. All our customers on the Benefit counter love it too, and if you haven't tried it yet, you are really missing out!
Clarins Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch, 15ml, RRP £26.00 (link)
The consistency of this primer is quite thick and it looks like a pink toned paste. I find this too thick to apply all over my face so I only use it on problem areas where I have fine lines or visible pores. I love the packaging of the Clarins primer, it comes in a cute little glass jar, however as for the product itself I prefer Benefit's Porefessional. Basically the Clarins Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch does the same thing as Porefessional. Only Porefessional does it better.
Laura Mercier Oil Free Foundation Primer, 50ml, RRP £28.00 (link)
I usually love Laura Mercier products, but their oil free foundation primer is a waste of money in my opinion. It just doesn't do anything for my skin. Apparently it's supposed to create an invisible layer between your face and your foundation, but to me there's no difference if I use this primer or not. The only reason I have not parted with this is because it was pretty expensive, so I am keeping hold of it and letting it clutter my make up collection. Maybe it's just not suitable for my skin type, but if I ever manage to use this up I know I won't be repurchasing it.
So as you can see, Porefessional is clearly my all time favourite foundation primer and the one I reach for the most. Smashbox come in as a close second.
Do you use foundation primer? Which ones are your favourites?

  1. I love the Laura Mercier primers, but then I don't like the silicone feeling ones like Porefessional so it must just be personal preference! I've not tried the other two in your collection though so really interesting hearing about them. I definitely need to try a Smashbox primer! Great post x

  2. Great selection, I love the Clarins beauty Flash Balm, but I only use that every now and then and most days I use Urban Decay, but I'm on the hunt for something new and have wonderful things about the Laura Mercier range, so I think that's my next purchase :o). Xx

  4. I feel the same way about the Laura Mercier primer I have (the radiance one). I prefer my primers to leave a nice silicony-like feel, because I find they tend to make my makeup look nicer! The Clarins and Porefessional are fantastic :)

  6. I live in Malaysia and having oily skin doesn't help with the constant heat of our climate here. So far I have tried Revlon Photoready primer, Etude House Baby Choux (peach) and Biore Face Milk. By far my favourite is Etude House Baby Choux :)

  7. I have the Laura Mercier oil free primer. I really like the formula but I think as a primer it's ok - I don't hate but I'm not wowed xx

    1. I don't like the LM one at all, and would really expect more as it's so expensive xx

  8. I have the Benefit and Laura Mercier primers and I'm never quite sure if they're doing what they should be/making a difference but then I don't wear heavy coverage foundations very often so this might be why they don't come into their own.
