My Fake Tan Routine

Hey Everyone!
I hope you are all well and had a good week!
Today's post is going to be on a subject very close to my heart: Fake Tan!
I am a massive fake tan addict. I've been fake tanning for about 8 years now. Before I started fake tanning I was using sunbeds, but I gave those up when I was about 25 and started to get worried about skin cancer, premature ageing and wrinkles.
I know some might say why don't you just go with your natural skin colour, but I really don't think it suits me. For reference, naturally I'm about an NC15 in MAC foundations. Fake tan brings me up to and NC30-35 which I find looks a lot better on me. A few years ago I tried going without fake tan, but it really affected my confidence. I didn't even last a month before I hit the (fake tan) bottle again!
Here is what I do to make sure I am nice and tanned all year round.
The Night Before I Fake Tan:
One of the most important steps of fake tanning is prepping your skin. It don't matter how good your fake tan is, if you don't prepare your skin properly, no fake tan is going to look good! The night before I apply my fake tanning lotion, I exfoliate my skin and apply a body butter. I love using Soap and Glory Body Scrubs to exfoliate my skin. They get rid of any dead skin cells (nice) and old fake tan. At the moment I'm also using the Soap and Glory Righteous Butter to moisturise my skin after exfoliating. These 2 steps will prevent your fake tan from looking patchy or streaky. They will also make your fake tan last longer!
 The Fake Tanning Process:
I always fake tan in the evenings. After my shower I apply the fake tan with a tanning mitt and let the colour develop over night. Even though fake tan mousse may be easier to apply than lotions, I prefer lotions because I find that mousse can be a bit drying on my skin.
The next morning I  rinse the fake tan guide colour off in the shower and am left with a nice golden tan!
Maintaining my Tan:
My favourite shower products to use are shower creams as they do not strip the fake tan of my skin. I never use any kind of oil based products as I find they make my fake tan go patchy. Not a good look! Body creams are also great as fake tan can sometimes be a bit drying and this way you are putting some moisture back into your skin!
Topping Up my Fake Tan throughout the week:
I always Top up my fake tan several times throughout the week using Garnier Summer Body. I've tried a lot of gradual fake tanners but this one is my favourite! Any fake tan you use will gradually fade during the week, but using a product like this will make sure you remain tanned throughout the whole week!
Fake Tanning my Face:
I don't fake tan my face. I know there are fake tan products out there designed for the face but I prefer to keep my face fake tan free so my pores don't get clogged and that I don't get any breakouts. Because my face is a lot lighter than my skin, I buy foundations to match my neck /  chest area rather than my face and that works great for me!
Fake Tanning my Hands:
Fake tanning hands can be quite difficult, and I have found the best product to use on my hands is a fake tanning mist.  Fake tanning lotions can absorb into fingers and knuckles and end up looking really obvious. A mist will distribute the product a lot more evenly and will look a lot more natural on your hands. Fake tan always fades on my hands really quickly though, and I have to admit sometimes I have pale hands and very tanned arms!

Well that's it for my fake tanning routine. Thank you for reading I hope you've found it useful!
Do you fake tan? What products are part of your rountine?

  1. I usually only fake tan when I'm going on a night out, but I use the same products as you! I go for Sugar Crush scrub, the Righteous Butter, and St Moriz mousse tan. I'm still pretty new to the whole tanning routine though so this post has definitely given me a few helpful tips!
